Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) as part of its recent initiative evicted over a thousand hawkers from the footpaths and roads in Gulistan to free them up for pedestrians and vehicular movement today (September 11, 2022).

The drive led by Chief Estate Officer Md Muniruzzaman started at 11:00am and continued till 3:00pm.

DSCC spokesperson, also Public Relations officer Md Abu Nasher said work is going on to mark zones—red, yellow and green--and the eviction drive was conducted after the Gulistan area was marked red.

Nasher also confirmed that over a thousand hawkers were evicted during today's drive.

Meanwhile Moniruzzaman said the traffic on Mayor Mohammad Hanif flyover has significantly increased since Padma Bridge's opening which is why they conducted the drive, in light of DSCC mayor's direction to ease vehicular movement.

DSCC, on September 7, decided it will be dividing city roads into three categories -- red, yellow and green. Red zones will be completely off-limits to hawkers. They will, however, be able to set up their stalls on footpaths and roads in yellow and green zones on conditions based on time and weekday.

DSCC spokesperson and also Public Relations officer Md Abu Nasher said work is going on to mark the zones—red, yellow and green.

Nasher said they have identified areas from Gulistan Zero Point to Surgent Ahad Police Box via Bangabandhu Avenue as red zone.
