AL lawmaker Afsarul Ameen passes away

Dr Afsarul Ameen, an Awami League lawmaker from Chattogram-10 constituency and former minister, passed away at Square Hospital in Dhaka at 4:00pm today. He was 73.

He was undergoing treatment at the hospital when he passed away, said Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, whip of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad.

Dr Afsarul Ameen, a freedom fighter, had been suffering from cancer.

He was elected lawmaker from Chattogram-9 constituency in 2008. He was elected lawmakers from the same constituency, which was renamed Chattogram-10, two more times in 2014 and 2018.

Dr Afsarul Ameen was the vice president of Chattogram city unit AL and also served the unit as joint general secretary and organisational secretary.

He was first made shipping minister in 2008. Later, he was given the charge of the primary and mass education ministry which he served till 2013.
