‘Comment on PM’: SC upholds HC bail for Mohila Dal leader Sonia

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday upheld a High Court order that granted ad-interim bail to Sonia Akhter Smriti, founder president of Rajbari Blood Donors and a member of the district Mohila Dal, in a case filed for making derogatory remark on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a Facebook post.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order after dismissing an appeal filed by the state challenging the HC bail order. Other two judges of the bench are Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim.

Details of the SC order could not be known as its full text was not released yet.

Sonia will get released from jail following the apex court order if she is not arrested in any other case.

On October 31 last year the HC granted ad-interim bail to Sonia following a petition filed by her seeking bail in the case.

On October 5 last year, a local Awami League leader, Shamsul Arefin Chowdhury, lodged a written complaint with Rajbari Sadar Police Station against Sonia for her derogatory Facebook post about the prime minister. The complaint was later recorded as a case.
