‘Ensure justice for teachers’

A group of prominent citizens, including university teachers, demanded proper investigation and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators behind murder and humiliation of teachers in Ashulia and Narail yesterday.

They made the demands at a protest rally in the capital's Shahbagh organised under the banner of "Shabagh Against Oppression".

Minority Rights Forum, Students alliance Parishad, Teachers alliance Parishad and University-College Teachers Association, participated in the rally, presided over by activist Akramul Haque.

While addressing the rally, publisher Robin Ahsan said college teacher Swapan Kumar Biswas was humiliated for belonging to a religious minority community.

"He was humiliated in front of the police. We demand immediate resignation of responsible police superintendent and district commissioner," he added.

DU Prof Robayet Ferdous said, "Justice remained elusive in every such incident. Meanwhile, reactionary forces got even more powerful."

"If we don't raise our voice and fail to ensure proper justice, these incidents will keep repeating," said DU Prof Kaberi Gayen of mass communication and journalism.

In Ashulia, school teacher Utpal Kumar Sarkar died while undergoing treatment at Savar Enam Medical College and Hospital early yesterday, after a student hit him with a cricket stump on June 25.

Meanwhile, in Narail's Sadar upazila, Mirzapur United College's acting Principal Swapan Kumar Biswas was assaulted on June 17.
