MA Mannan, former mayor of Gazipur City Corporation, passed away at a hospital in Dhaka today. He was 72.

Mannan was the first mayor of the city corporation and also former state minister for religious affairs from BNP.

He breathed his last at United Hospital around 4:30 pm, BNP's Gazipur district unit General Secretary Shah Riyazul Hannan told our local correspondent.

The former Gazipur mayor was put on life support last night (April 27, 2022), Riyazul said.

He added that Mannan's family members are now at the hospital. The timing of his janaza has not been decided yet.

Mannan had been suffering from various diseases, including high blood pressure and diabetes, since he was sent to jail in 2015, UNB reported quoting BNP chairperson's media wing member Sayrul Kabir Khan.

On February 11, 2015, police arrested Mannan from his Baridhara residence in the capital in a case filed for allegedly hurling petrol bombs on a passenger bus in Gazipur.

He was released on bail on January 6, 2017. He later became inactive politically due to his various ailments.

Mannan was elected mayor in the first-ever election to Gazipur City Corporation in July, 2013.
