Judicial functions partly resume at B’baria courts

After a six-day halt, judicial activities at Brahmanbaria courts resumed yesterday as lawyers partially withdrew their boycott programme.

On Friday, the lawyers announced to withdraw their court boycott programme following the law minister's assurance on resolving their issues with two judges in the district.

The lawyers, however, continued to boycott Judge Sharmin Nigar and Judge Mohammad Faruque of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1.

The lawyers had demanded transfer of Judge Sharmin Nigar and Judge Mohammad Faruque, and Najir (staff) Mominul Islam Chowdhury.

The Brahmanbaria Bar Association started boycotting the court on January 4, demanding withdrawal of the three.

On January 5, the High Court summoned Brahmanbaria Bar Association's President Md Tanvir Bhuiyan, Secretary (Administration) Md Akkas Ali and lawyer Zubayer Islam, directing them to appear on January 17 for misbehaving with Judge Mohammad Faruque and for creating chaos in the courtroom on January 2.

The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil also issued a rule asking Tanvir, Akkas and Zubayer to show cause as to why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against them.

On January 10, the same HC bench summoned 21 lawyers from Brahmanbaria court, directing them to appear before it on January 23 for chanting slogans against Judge Sharmin Nigar and hampering judicial functions on January 5 and 8 after this bench issued a contempt of court rule and summon orders against lawyers Tanvir, Akkas and Zubayer.

The 21 lawyers, including Babul, have been ordered to appear before the HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil on January 23 to explain their conducts.

The HC issued the summon orders and contempt of court rules on a suomuto move after Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique sent matters to the bench for their disposals.
