Child Marriage: Parents, registrar jailed for six months

The parents of two minors and a marriage registrar (kazi) have been sentenced to six months' imprisonment for their involvement in child marriage in Bagerhat.

Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Muhammad Mushabberul Islam gave the sentence after conducting a mobile court at the office of marriage registrar Ataul Bari in Nagerbazar area of ​​Bagerhat town on Friday night.

The convicts are Ataul, Kabir Sardar, father of a  girl, and Sajib Howladar, father of a boy.

They were sent to jail on Friday night.

The UNO said evidence of child marriage was found by checking birth certificates and other documents. Kabir married off his school-going teenage daughter to a grown man, and Sajib married off his minor son to an adult girl.

The three were convicted under Prevention of Child Marriage Act 2017.
