Rumour of 7 letters being dropped from Bangla alphabet untrue

A screenshot of a message saying that seven letters will be dropped from the Bangla alphabet from next year is not true, said officials.

The person sending the fake message claimed that it was from Selina Hossain, president of Bangla Academy.

People were spreading the screenshot on social media and criticising the government for taking such a decision.

The screenshot said that from 2024, three alphabets of Swarabarna and four alphabets of Banjanbarna would be dropped.

Contacted, Selina Hossain told The Daily Star, "I don't know anything about this. I just heard about it. Bangla Academy did not take any such decision. Those who are spreading such message are spreading rumors."
