Who will be the next IGP?

The tenure of the incumbent Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun will end on January 11.

It has become a major discussion among the top tier of police, who will be the next police chief to lead the force of around 2.20 lakh members.

But sources in the home ministry and police headquarters (PHQ) said there will be no new faces.

The incumbent police chief will get at least a year extension and be appointed contractually to lead the crucial year ahead as the national election is scheduled to be held early next year, they said.

A file with the proposal for an extension has already been sent for the approval of the prime minister from the home ministry on Thursday, they added.

Talking with the newspaper, a high official of the PHQ said they are expecting that the incumbent police chief will get an extension for one and a half years.

Everything now depends on the PM's approval, the official said, requesting anonymity.

If Mamun gets the appointment then it will be a record as there is no recent example that the police chief's post got an extension and a contractual appointment.

On the other hand, sources said three names are coming to the fore for as possible candidates.

They are additional inspector general (administration) of PHQ Md Kamrul Ahsan, Anti Terrorism Unit chief, also an additional IGP Ruhul Amin and Special Branch chief, also an additional IGP Monirul Islam.

Of the three, Kamrul Ahsan, an officer of BCS batch 12, is ahead in the race to become the police chief, said sources.

Ruhul Amin is an officer of the BCS batch 12, and Monirul Islam BCS batch 15.
