Criticising the approach of safari parks to conserve wildlife, Begum Habibun Nahar, deputy minister for environment, forest and climate change, yesterday said "it's sad to watch wildlife suffering in the enclosures of safari parks".

"When I visit Gazipur [safari park], I feel sad seeing tigers imprisoned, languishing in enclosures," she said.

She made the comments at Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation seminar held at Shilpakala Academy in Khulna city.

Nahar said she is against the approach of zoos and safari parks, and underscored the need to protect Sundarbans.

The seminar gave way for hundreds of voluntary organisations working for the conservation of Sundarbans to talk about their issues. They demanded official identity cards, and arrangement of training and equipment.

Molla Rezaul Karim, conservator of forest (wildlife and nature conservation), assured them of extending necessary help in their efforts.

Mihir Kumar Doe, conservator of forest (Khulna circle) presided over the seminar, while divisional forest officers from east and west of Sundarbans were present.
