46th death anniv of Maulana Bhasani today

The 46th death anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, a legendary political leader of the sub-continent, will be observed today.

Born in 1880 at Dhangara village in Sirajganj, Bhasani dedicated his entire life to establishing the rights of the oppressed and downtrodden.

Bhasani passed away on this day in 1976. He was buried at Santosh in Tangail.

Different socio-political organisations will mark the day with elaborate programmes across the country. They will place wreaths at his grave.

Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) will also organise different programmes, including placing wreaths at the grave of Bhashani, special prayers, and food distribution.

Besides, discussions, blood donations, photo exhibitions and performance of songs will also be held.

A seminar on "Sense and belief of Maulana Bhasani" was organised by the university at the seminar hall of bio-technology and genetic engineering department yesterday.

VC Prof Farhad Hossain addressed the seminar as the chief guest and Pro-vice Chancellor Prof RM Solaiman as special guest.

Prof Aktatuzzaman, a teacher of nutrition and food science department of Dhaka University, was the main speaker, while Syed Irfanul Bari, a close aide of Maulana Bhasani and currently a part-time teacher of Bhashani studies at MBSTU, presented the keynote.

Prof Mohammad Touhidur Rahman, registrar of MBSTU, presented the welcome speech.

The brave and devoted leader worked relentlessly and spent almost his entire life for the oppressed masses, which earned him the title "Mazlum Jana Neta", meaning the leader of the oppressed, they said.
