A 22-year-old woman gave birth to a baby boy near the Padma Bridge toll plaza in Jazira, Shariatpur yesterday (July 4, 2022). She was on her way to Dhaka from Madaripur's Shibchar.

Kakoli Akter and her husband Ali Hasan are Border Guard Bangladesh personnel, working in Cox's Bazar. Kakoli came to the village on maternity leave one month ago.

Kakoli was first taken to Royal Hospital in Shibchar around 7:30am after her labour pain started, but on-duty doctors advised her relatives to take her to Dhaka.

Her elder sister Maya Akter told The Daily Star, "When the doctors of the local hospital told us to take Kakoli to Dhaka, we needed some time to manage a vehicle. We reached Padma Bridge toll plaza (in Jazira) around 10am."

"Within minutes, my sister's labour pain increased. She was taken to a house near Padma Bridge's toll plaza where she gave birth," she said.

"We safely reached home with the help of police. Both mother and child are in good health now," Maya added.

Contacted, Sheikh Mohammod Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Padma Bridge (South) Police Station, said, "A child was born near to the bridge's toll plaza in Jazira yesterday morning. We safely managed to send the mother and the newborn home."
