Bus service suspended in Faridpur after plain-clothes police beat up drivers, supervisor

Protesting the beating up of two bus drivers and a supervisor of a bus by plain-clothes policemen, bus workers have suspended the movement of bus service on all routes from Faridpur since this afternoon (September 13, 2022).

Demanding the punishment of the those involved in the incident, bus workers gathered at Notun Bus Stand immediately after the incident and announced the decision of not plying buses on all routes from Faridpur until the authorities bring those involved in the incident to book, reports our Faridpur correspondent quoting Golam Nasir, general secretary of Faridpur Motor Workers Union.

According to the workers, two buses coming to Faridpur from Tekerhat and Boalmari were entering the terminal at Goalchamat area at 3:15pm.

At that time, a gridlock was created on the road as easy bikes were standing beside the road. 

"At that time, a pickup van of police was crossing the intersection on its way to Faridpur city from Rajbari. Due to the traffic jam in the area, some policemen in plain clothes came out of the van and beat up bus drivers Md Amir Hossain (50) and Jhantu Khan (45)," claimed Nasir.

They also beat up bus supervisor Md Rajeaul (30), he said.

Immediately after the incident, bus workers took to streets, demonstrated and stopped plying buses on all routes from Faridpur demanding the punishment of those involved in the incident.

Commuters have been suffering due to the sudden suspension of the bus service. Some were seen standing at the bus terminals while some were seen walking towards their destinations.

Golam Nasir, general secretary of Faridpur Motor Workers Union, said they will not resume bus service until the involved people are not brought to justice.

"Identify the police van and the cops after checking the CCTV footages of the spot," he asked police.

Tuhin Laskar, inspector of traffic police in Faridpur said that they have already checked the CCTV footages and found that it was a police van.

"But it has no registration number and it does not belong to district police," he said, adding that they are trying to know whether the vehicle belongs to highway police or PBI or any other law enforcement agencies.
