ACC seeks travel ban for contractor Mithu involved in ‘health sector syndicate’

The Anti-Corruption Commission has sought travel ban against a controversial contractor who allegedly embezzled and laundered huge money through syndicates in the health sector.

The ACC also seized the assets of Motazzerul Islam alias Mithu, the contractor.

The action was taken against him upon a court's order, said ACC Secretary Mahbub Hossain at a press conference held at the ACC head office in Segunbagicha in the capital this afternoon.

The commission has sent a letter to the Special Branch (SB) of the Bangladesh Police for his travel ban, he said.

He said an ACC investigation is going on against Mithu.

"The intelligence report indicates that Mithu is currently staying in the country. These actions have been taken for the sake of the investigation," the ACC secretary said.

Responding to a journalist's question about whether the ACC will arrest Motazzerul, he said that the investigating officer will take action against him in accordance with the law.

When asked, if his assets had been confiscated in the US, the secretary said he had no information on the matter.

ACC sources said that Motazzerul embezzled crores of money through his contracting company by influencing the supply of various goods and development projects in the health sector.
