Eliminating Aedes: JU, DNCC to set up research centre on campus

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Jahangirnagar University (JU) have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a research centre on the university campus with an aim to eliminate the menace of Aedes mosquitoes.

DNCC Chief Health Officer Brig Gen AKM Shafiqur Rahman and JU Treasurer Professor Rasheda Akhtar signed the MoU at the DNCC hall room around 12:00 noon today.

Explaining the reasons for setting up the lab, Prof Rasheda Akhtar said more and more research is needed to eliminate Aedes mosquitoes, carriers of the dengue virus.

The research centre will examine the variety of Aedes mosquitoes and the pesticides the DNCC is using to control the mosquito population, Prof Rasheda said.

The DNCC will take steps according to the research findings, she added.

While addressing the event, DNCC Mayor Atiqur Rahman said the research centre will play a significant role in eliminating the mosquito menace as it will conduct research on Aedes mosquitoes.

Meanwhile, a book titled "Mosquito Bite Harmful" (Moshar Kamor Khotikor) was unveiled at the programme.

The book will be distributed at different schools under the DNCC to raise awareness among the children about the adverse impact of mosquito bites.
