‘My son, why didn’t you come back too?’

Slain sailor Hadisur’s father wails at Dhaka airport

"Oh my son, why didn't you come back too?"

Abdur Razzak Hawlader was wailing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport as the body of Hadisur Rahman, third engineer of MV Banglar Samriddhi, did not arrive in Dhaka with 28 crew members.

Razzak, his wife Amena Begum, their sons and other relatives thronged at the airport to get information on Hadisur's last moments and whereabouts of his remains from his colleagues.

Razzak was in tears. "This is my son," he kept pointing to a photo he was holding.

Hadisur was killed in a missile attack at the Olvia port in Ukraine last Wednesday (March 2, 2022).

All 28 crew members of the ship reached Dhaka airport this noon. Hadisur's body is still in Ukraine, and efforts are underway to bring the body home, officials said.

When relatives of the 28 returnees were elated to receive their loved ones, air turned heavy with the grief of Hadisur's family.

"I want my baba (son) back. Everyone has returned but my son did not… I did not see my son yet," Amena Begum kept crying.

Hadisur was the sole earner of the family.
