BCL leader files sedition case against Chittagong University teacher

Religious Politics and Communal Harmony in Bangladesh: A Recent Impasse

A local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League in Chittagong filed a sedition case against a teacher of Chittagong University today for allegedly making derogatory observations about Liberation War and Bangabandhu, in an article.

Magistrate Abu Salem Md Noman of Metropolitan Court-2 in Chittagong ordered police to take necessary steps against Anwar Hossain Chowdhury, assistant professor of Sociology of the university, as specific allegations were made against him.

Asaduzzaman Tanvir, former joint convener of Fatikchhari upazila unit BCL, filed the case with Chittagong court following the publication of the article in a US journal, our Chittagong University correspondent reports quoting his lawyer Advocate AKM Azharul Islam.

In the article titled 'Religious Politics and Communal Harmony in Bangladesh: A Recent Impasse' Chowdhury allegedly presented various objectionable, controversial and defaming statements about Bangladesh's Liberation War, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Awami League and its President Sheikh Hasina, according to the case statement.

Chowdhury's article was published in the Global Journal of Human-Social Science: C, Sociology & Culture, Volume 17, Issue, 3, Version 1.0 in 2017.

The publisher of the journal is Global Journals Inc of USA.

Anwar Hossain, the then assistant proctor of Chittagong University, was sent to jail after he surrendered before a Chittagong court on December 18, 2017, in the murder case of BCL central leader Diaz Irfan Chowdhury.

Diaz's mother filed the murder case on November 24 with a Chittagong court against around 20 people, including Anwar Hossain and Tipu.
