Be sincere so that accused of sexual violence cannot get bail
Anisul urges all concerned
Law Minister Anisul Huq today urged all concerned to be careful and sincere so that the people involved in the incidents of torture and rape of women and children cannot get bail from the High Court.
“I have information that the accused of some sensational cases were sentenced by the trial courts but they were granted bail by the High Court,” he said.
He said this while addressing as chief guest at a meeting organised on the occasion of handing over keys of cars allotted for the district and sessions judges at the premises of the Directorate of Registration office in the capital.
The law minister said granting bail to the accused is the discretion of judges, but the discretionary powers will have to be applied legally.
“I will talk to the attorney general on this issue. Time has come and all concerned have to be rigid so that such offenders cannot get bail and they are kept in jail,” he said.
Minister Anisul said the government will take all necessary steps so that the trial proceedings of the cases filed for rape and torture on children and women are finished speedily like that of the case filed for killing Feni Madrasha student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
He said BNP leaders are telling lies by saying that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is not being granted bail although she deserves bail in the cases.
The trial court has sentenced the BNP chief to five years’ imprisonment for misappropriating the money of orphans and the High Court has enhanced her punishment from five years to 10 years’ imprisonment.
Khaleda Zia was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment in another corruption case, he said, adding that BNP leaders are giving false information to people about Khaleda Zia’s bail.
