Leaders and activists of Jubo League, the youth front of ruling Awami League, today blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway protesting the killing of one of its former leader.

The angry leaders and activists brought out a procession carrying the body of the victim at Shaheb Bazar bypass intersection on the highway around 1:00pm, reports our Gazipur correspondent. This caused traffic jam on the highway.

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control after half an hour.

Meanwhile, the youth front activists will observe half-day hartal in Kaliakoir upazila tomorrow (Sunday) demanding immediate arrest of the killers.

Starting from 6:00am, the general strike will continue till 12:00pm across the upazila while Dhaka-Tangail highway will remain out of purview of the hartal.

Mohammad Hiru Mia, current president of Kaliakoir unit Jubo League, made the announcement at a rally held at Kaliakoir Bus Stand this afternoon.

Earlier yesterday, Rafiqul Islam, 43, a former president of Kaliakoir unit Jubo League, came under attack while he was sitting at a tea-stall beside Bangabandhu College. The attackers armed with iron rods, sticks and machetes swooped on Rafiqul, leaving him critically injured.

Doctors declared him dead when he was taken to Kaliakoir Upazila Heath Complex.

The attack took place during a meeting organised by Kaliakoir municipality Awami League to observe the National Mourning Day. Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque was present at the meeting as chief guest.

The attack was allegedly the result of an internal feud over post in the party politics.

Victim’s brother Abdul Motaleb said they will go for a tougher movement if the real killers are not booked for justice.

Police detained two persons – Mohammad Sohel and Mohammad Hossain – last night in this connection, Omar Faruk, officer-in-charge of Kaliakoir Police Station, told our correspondent.
