First session of 11th parliament Wednesday

The first session of the 11th Jatiya Sangsad will begin at 3:00pm on Wednesday, January 30.

President Abdul Hamid called the session on January 9 exercising the power bestowed upon him as per clause (1) of article 72 of the constitution.

President Hamid will deliver speech on the first day of the session, said sources at the Parliament Secretariat.

According to parliament’s rules of procedure, the speaker and deputy speaker will be elected on the first session of the parliament. Sources said the first session of the House might be longer. But the tenure and activities will be finalised at the meeting of business advisory committee of the parliament.

All preparations have been taken for the first session, the sources said, adding that security measures have been tightened and Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban beautified with flowers as well as vegetables tubs.

A total of 289 elected parliament members took oath on January 3. As per the procedure, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury first took oath and signed in the oath book.

Later, she conducted the oath-taking ceremony where 289 lawmakers including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took oath.
