Nominations of Khaleda, Tarique submitted ahead of BNP’s sixth council

BNP Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed today submitted the nomination papers for Khaleda Zia, the incumbent chief of the party, for the position of chairperson ahead of BNP’s sixth council.

Rizvi submitted the nomination to returning officer Nazrul Islam Khan, also a standing committee member of BNP, at the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters this morning.

Meanwhile, BNP Joint Secretary General Md Shahjahan today submitted the nomination papers for Tarique Rahman, elder son of Khaleda, for the position of senior vice-chairman.

Tarique, who is the incumbent senior vice-chairman of the party, has been living in London for the past eight years.

Several BNP leaders today visited the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), the venue where the party will hold its poll on March 19.

According to the council schedule, aspirants for chairperson and senior vice-chairman posts have to submit their nomination papers today (March 4) and those will be scrutinised on March 5. The deadline for withdrawal of nominations is on March 6 from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Election to the posts is scheduled to be held during the BNP's sixth council on March 19 after six years. Besides, the party's national executive committee members will be elected on that day.

In the BNP's fifth council in 2009, Khaleda was elected chairperson unopposed of the party, while Tarique was made senior vice-chairman.
