‘Shishu Bokta’ Rafiqul remanded in 2 cases

Rafiqul Islam Madani, widely known as "Shishu Bokta", was placed on remand today in two cases filed with Motijheel and Tejgaon police stations. 

A virtual court in Dhaka placed Madani on a four-day remand in a case filed with Motijheel Police Station over the violence on March 25 this year.

Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sufiyan Md Noman passed the order after Md Kamrul Hasan Talukder, an inspector of the Detective Branch of Police and also the investigation officer of the case, submitted a 10-day remand prayer. 

Earlier in the day, Madani was shown arrested in the case after the IO submitted another petition, even though Madani's name was not included in the First Information Report of the case.

During the hearing, the magistrate sent a virtual link to the jail authorities of Kashimpur High-Security Jail in Gazipur and later placed him on remand.

The case was filed against 51 named and 200-300 unnamed leaders and activists of Hefajat-e-Islam with Motijheel Police Station on March 25 with charges of preventing policemen from discharging their duties.

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim placed Madani on a five-day remand in another case filed with Tejgaon Police Station, under the Digital Security Act, after Sub-inspector of the police station Shoibuddin Ahmed submitted a seven-day remand prayer.

Mohammad Mamun filed the case with the police station on April 11.

Madani was arrested from the Motijheel area on that date during a demonstration protesting the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the occasion of the golden jubilee of independence, and later he was freed.

On April 7, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Madani from his ancestral home in Netrokona's Purbatola area.

HEFAJAT'S KASEMI ON 7-DAY REMAND

The same court today placed Maulana Korban Ali Kasemi, joint secretary general of Bangladesh Khilafah Majlis and also vice-president of Hefajat-e-Islam Dhaka Mahanagar committee, on a seven-day remand in a case filed with Paltan Police Station over the 2013 mayhem in Dhaka.

The magistrate passed the order after Inspector Md Kamrul Hasan produced him before his court with a 10-day remand prayer.

In the remand prayer, the IO said Kasemi was directly involved with the incident, and he needs to be remanded to know the names and addresses of other accused responsible for committing such offenses.

On the other hand, the defense submitted a bail petition and cancellation of the remand prayer, saying that their client was not involved with the incident.

Upon hearing both sides, the magistrate turned down the defense pleas and placed Kasemi on a seven-day remand.

A team of DB of Gulshan Division Police arrested Kasemi from the capital's Bashabo area yesterday afternoon.
