LIFE AT 75

Ramendu Majumdar was born on August 9, 1941 in Lakshmipur, the son of Late Kuntal Krishna Majumdar and Late Leela Majumdar. He is known for being an actor, stage director, and theatre producer.

Among the list of accomplishments, he is most popular for receiving "Ekushey Padak" in 2009, which is one of the most prestigious awards bestowed upon those who have made significant contributions in particular fields. Star Showbiz is proud to provide to its readers a brief rendezvous with Ramendu Majumdar.

What inspired you to get involved in theatres?

In 1972, after the war, I along with a couple of my acquaintances realized that there was favourable scenario for arts, so we formed our own theatre. During the time of war a lot of us went to Kolkata and over there we saw a revolution in the theatre and arts scenario and that inspired us all very much and so we decided to go ahead with our plan to start our own in Bangladesh.

What are your thoughts on stage dramas in current times?

I think our best accomplishment was that back in the days we could create a demand for dramas but from what I see now, there is no demand for dramas and viewership is going downhill. Another reason for this drop in viewership is that the number of group performers has increased but quality of performances has diminished for which the audience is not drawn to the theatre.

What do you plan on doing in the coming days?

Every time I look back, it makes me realize that I have not done anything monumental in my career. Whatever time I have left in life I want to create something that will stay in physical form even if I am not around. At the moment, I am working on making it happen.
