Victory: Pakistan army surrenders to allied forces

Pakistan Army Eastern Commander Lt. General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi surrendered unconditionally on behalf of his 93,000 Pakistan troops at a public ceremony at Dhaka Ramna Race Course (now Suhrawardy Uddyan) to the Bangladesh and Indian joint command on December 16, 1971 after nine-month-long bloody war. It was decided that General Jagjit Singh Aurora, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army, would sign the document on behalf of the victorious side while General Niazi for the defeated side. In one of the fastest surrender in military history, Niazi put his sign on the surrender document at 5:01pm (Bangladesh time) and officially acknowledges Bangladesh as a free, independent and sovereign state.
