War crimes trial

International Crimes Tribunals awarded death to several top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami including the party chief Motiur Rahman Nizami in October, Mir Quasem Ali in November and Azharul Islam, and former Jatiya Party lawmaker Syed Mohammad Qaisar, both in December. The Supreme Court commuted death penalty to imprisonment for life for Delawar Hossain Sayedee in September. Judicial procedures are pending for next stage of judgement of Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Motiur Rahman Nizami who were sentenced to death by the special tribunals.

Meanwhile, former chief of Jamaat Ghulam Azam, nayeb-e-ameer AKM Yusuf and former BNP minister Abdul Alim died in prison.
