First meet our demands, then reopen New Market, say Dhaka College students

Students of Dhaka College have threatened to protest again if New Market area shops are reopened before their demands are met.

They have been demanding legal action for "attacking students, firing at the college's administrative building and throwing teargas shells" during yesterday's students-traders clashes in New Market area.

Humayun Kabir Amjad, a student of Dhaka College, told The Daily Star: "If the markets are opened without meeting our demands, we will take the streets again."

Since this morning, the students have been staging a peaceful sit-in in front of Dhaka College principal's office.

Mohammad Rifat, another student, told The Daily Star, "We have heard that the traders have decided to open shops in New Market area. We are in talks. Our primary decision is: if the shops are opened before meeting our demands, we will protest again. We will talk to the principal of the college once our talks are over."
