Two people were killed this evening in an accident while riding on a motorcycle on the Padma Bridge, the very day it opened for public.

The deceased were identified as Md Alamgir Hossain (25), and Md Fazlu (24), Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital's police outpost, told the The Daily Star.

SM Mizanur Rahman, additional superintendent of police of Shariatpur district, told The Daily Star that the two youths were filming on their phones while crossing the Padma Bridge on a motorcycle when they met with an accident around 8pm between pillars 26 and 27.

Locals rescued the youths and sent them to Dhaka on a pick-up van, he informed.

They were taken to DMCH with critical injuries at around 10:30pm when the on-duty doctor declared them dead, Inspector Bachchu Mia said.

The bodies were kept at DMCH morgue for autopsy, the police official added.

Joydeb Roy, a friend of the victims, said the duo used to live in Nababganj area of Dhaka.

Alamgir was a motorcycle mechanic by profession while Fazlu returned from aboard recently, he said.

"Six of us visited the Padma Bridge on three motorcycles. Two of our motorcycles were ahead of Alamgir and Fazlu. Few minutes later, we heard about the accident over phone," Joydeb also said.

"Immediately, we reached them and took them to DMCH on a pick-up van," he added.
