Shakespeare celebrated at JKKNIU
Marking 452nd birth anniversary and 400th death anniversary of William Shakespeare, a daylong festival was held on the campus of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) in Mymensingh this past week.
Students of English Department of the university organised the festival including a colourful rally, cultural show, poetry recitation and a discussion.
A cultural show was held in the afternoon at the department's hall room. The function included recitation from Shakespeare, staging of short plays of Shakespeare, on traditional folk plays and screening of films on the bard.
To open the day's programme, titled "Shakespeare Everywhere", a colourful rally was brought out in the morning. Students, dressed up with the characters of Shakespeare's writings joined the rally.
A seminar on the life and works of Shakespeare was also held. Prof Dr Mohit Ul Alam, vice-chancellor of the university was the chief guest. Treasurer of the university Prof AMM Shamsur Rahman, head of English Department Prof Dr Mohammad Imdadul Huda, Prof Dr Sheikh Mehdi Hasan also addressed the seminar with Prof Dr Bijoy Bushan Das in the chair. A keynote paper, "Power Politics in Shakespeare" was presented at the seminar.
The immortal works of the bard like "Hamlet", "Romeo and Juliet" and "King Lear" have influenced literature and theatre for over 400 years and are doing till date, speakers said.
