Key winners at the Golden Globes 2019
The 76th Golden Globes for films and television, chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, were presented at a grand event recently, hosted by actors Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg. In films, Bohemian Rhapsody took home the award for Best Drama, while Green Book won the top honour in the Comedy or Musical category. The star of Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek, won the award for Best Actor (Drama) for bringing the aura and flamboyance of Freddie Mercury to life brilliantly in the Queen biopic, while Glen Close took home the award for Best Actress for her performance in The Wife. Christian Bale and Olivia Coleman won the awards for Best Actor and Actress (Comedy or Musical) for their performances in Vice and The Favourite respectively. Lady Gaga, who made her film debut with A Star Is Born, received the Best Original Song award, along with her co-lyricists, for the track, Shallow, from the same film.
In the television arena, The Americans won the top honour as the Best Drama Series, while the Netflix series, The Kominsky Method, won the award for Best Comedy or Musical. Meanwhile, co-host Sandra Oh won the Best Actress (Drama) award for her performance in Killing Eve. Oh is the first female of Asian descent in 39 years to win a Golden Globe as best leading actor. She paid tribute to the slew of Golden Globe-nominated films and TV shows featuring black and Asian actors and directors, including Crazy Rich Asians, Black Panther, and BlacKkKlansman. In addition, Richard Madden received the award for Best Actor in a Drama Series for Bodyguard.
