A splurge of plays for Shahnaz Khushi

With Eid around the corner, actors of the small screen are spending a whirlwind time shooting for special Eid TV plays and telefilms. Ramadan is one of the busiest times of the year as actors and filming crews struggle to complete their ventures before the deadline. Shahnaz Khushi will appear in a number of plays this Eid, many of which are scripted by her husband Brindaban Das. In a recent interview with The Daily Star, the actress takes time out from her hectic shooting schedule to about her upcoming ventures, and more.

What are you currently working on?

Shahnaz Khushi: I am quite busy with Eid plays. For the last ten days I have been shooting for a six episode TV play directed by Sagar Jahan and scripted by Brindaban Das. It will go on air during Eid on ATN Bangla. I am also involved in a number of single episode TV plays and tele-films, as well as a drama serial directed by Syedur Rahman Russell, which will be aired by Rtv.

Is it different filming during Ramadan, compared to the rest of the year?

Shahnaz Khushi: There are vast differences-- there's a time barrier due to Iftar breaks at sunset, as well as a strict deadline to meet. Actors work more responsibly around this time to accomplish our set goals. Even actors who do not fast during the month, have to be considerate for those who do, so usually people abstain from taking tea breaks or other refreshments during the day out of consideration.

How do you enjoy Eid shopping?

Shahnaz Khushi: Eid shopping is usually a pain for me, though I love to shop in general. Markets are packed around this time of the year and it's hard to get around. My errands are usually interrupted when I am recognised, and people tend to crowd around requesting photos or autographs.

Out of all the roles you are preparing for, which is your favourite so far?

Shahnaz Khushi: My favourite play so far is the one directed by Saifuzzaman Ashiq, titled “Bibekmoti”. It's scripted by Brindaban Das, whose plays always contain a social message. The narrative revolves around jatra actors, and focuses on their lives beyond the stage.
