Seasoned actor Mahfuz Ahmed has ruled over the TV media for the last few years. He has ventured into direction and has won the National Film Awards too. Recently, The Daily Star interviewed the multi-talented artiste.
You have been in the profession for long; do you still suffer from camera phobia?
Mahfuz: I'm always tense in front of the camera; I question whether I am delivering the best for my audience.
Why are you rarely seen in TV plays nowadays?
Mahfuz: I've taken a brief break from the medium. Like, I did not appear in any dramas for the film “Zero Degree” for a year. I'm now in search of a good script and strong plot.
As a TV director you have gained popularity. Do you have plans to make a film?
Mahfuz: Definitely, I will direct a movie. You need a big budget to make a good film but I can't squander my earnings that I have made through sheer hard work. I'm waiting for a good script and you need time for this.
Do you prefer to introduce yourself as an actor or director?
Mahfuz: First I'm an actor Mahfuz Ahmed. I'm honoured when people identify me as an actor, but I'm a little awkward when they brand me as director, but it's very gratifying at the same time.
Do current plays have any element of 'art' at all?
Mahfuz: We artistes have a cultural bent of mind but it will not depend on the artiste that the work will fall into this category or not. Rather, it will depend on the TV channel.
Do you miss your days as a journalist?
Mahfuz: The journalist in me inspires me to work better as an actor.
What do you consider the reasons behind your success?
Mahfuz: Hard work, honesty, vision and dedication.
What is the difference between doing TV plays and films?
Mahfuz: People forget a TV drama after some days. Cinema is a big examination centre for an artiste.
Do you have any regrets in your career?
Mahfuz: I often wonder if audiences will remember me for my works 20-25 years down the line. There is no alternative to good work.
