Joyeta Fahmi: Classical singer makes strides
Classical music is singer Joyeta Fahmi's forte. Rewards have poured in too as the young Tagore singer is now a popular name in the music arena in Mymensingh and the country.
Joyeta has close linkages with eminent Tagore artistes in Kolkata like Maya Sen, Sramona Sen and Rajsree Bhattacharya. She continues to train under Rajsree Bhattacharya.
Joyeta did her graduation and post graduation in Music from Kolkata University. She attained first position in a music competition organised by Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Sammilon Parishad (JRSSP) in 2003 and 2005, and now regularly participates in programmes organised by JRSSP, Chhayanaut, Bengal Foundation, Biswa Sahitya Kendra and Bangla Academy.
A listed artiste of Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television, Joyeta has also performed Tagore songs on TV channels.
A Rabindra Sangeet trainer at Mymensingh Shilpakala Academy, Joyeta founded Uttariya, a cultural organisation in 2009 to promote classical and traditional music among the younger generation.
Joyeta said, “To attain perfection in classical music is a continuous process. However, children and youth do not like to dedicate themselves to learning classical music for years together. They are fond of modern music and are reluctant to learn traditional and classical music.”
