Knowledge, peace and progress through folk music
A folk music festival was arranged on the weekend by Bangladesh Chhatra League's (BCL) Dhaka University (DU) unit at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC). It is a first of a kind initiative by the organisation. Despite the day-long drizzle, the event was houseful with students singing and clapping to the tunes of their roots. During an interview with The Daily Star, Sonjid Chandra Das, the President of BCL, DU explained, “Folk music is embedded in our heritage, but sadly, due to our busy lifestyles, the popularity of the genre is on the decline.” He further emphasised, “This initiative was simply to reconnect our youth to the essence of folk music, and thereby pay respect to our traditions.” Other artistes that performed at the musical soiree included Tun Tun Baul, Diti, Baula Band and others, along with the students of DU who all made it a memorable evening with their melodious tunes. Given the optimistic response from the young crowd, Sonjid Chandra Das said that they had plans for an even superior arrangement for their next ensemble.
