Safiya carries ‘Nikhoj’: Sporshia
"Whether it's a multi-starrer cast. or even a single scene- it doesn't really matter. A 5-second shot can really change the plot."
Orchita Sporshia, has been garnering tremendous praise for her performance as Safiya in Chorki's web-series "Nikhoj". In a chat with The Daily Star, the "Kathbirali" actress opens up about "Nikhoj", her upcoming ventures, and more.
Tell us about your character Safiya in "Nikhoj". What made you chose this role?
Safiya is a strong character – she struggles with herself, her family, and is on a quest to find her father, who was mysteriously kidnapped from their house.
Amidst all that, she still takes up the responsibility to take care of her family. I'd say that I didn't choose the role, the role chose me!
Is it easy to stand out as a protagonist in multi-starrer web-series?
Whether it's a multi-starrer cast. or even a single scene- it doesn't really matter. A 5-second shot can really change the plot. In "Nikhoj", many characters have equal importance. However, my character 'Safiya' carries the whole storyline.
You have been nominated for Meril Prothom Alo Awards 2021 for your performance in "Nabab LLB". What inspired you to take on this role?
"Nabab LLB" revolves around Shuvra, a rape victim, who faces social stigmas and exclusion from society after the devastating incident.
Earlier on, there was a lack of representation of rape victims on the silver screen. Many actresses refused the role of 'Shuvra', but I was keen on playing such a challenging role. If we can play the role of a lover, sister, and daughter, why not a victim?
You have been missing from television for almost 5 years, why is that?
I left the television industry for good, as I could not come to terms with the system that it runs on. It's unlikely that I will return.
What are your upcoming projects?
I am currently working on two web-series – Cinebuzz's "Holy Gun" and Binge's "Issac Liton", alongside Mosharraf Karim.
The teaser for "Holy Gun" was released recently. It's an anthology series that revolves around 6 negative female protagonists. The series highlights why society terms them as 'negative', and focuses on their personal narration. It will showcase their circumstances and what lead them to choose this path.
"Issac Liton" is a comedy thriller. We are still working on it so I can't really reveal anything about it.
I have completed dubbing for actress Rozina's "Fire Dekha", a government-granted film that revolves around the liberation war. I am playing the role of a village girl, opposite Nirab.
A picture where you posed with a snake has become viral on social media.
I really didn't think that people would like that picture so much. The snake came as a co-artiste, during the shoot of "Isaac Liton." Everybody was frightened by him, except me. I am really not scared of anyone except humans.
