Tahmid Islam’s ‘Art That Moves’ underway at 138 East

ARTWORK: TAHMID ISLAM

"Art That Moves', a vibrant exhibition by artist Tahmid Islam, is currently underway at 138 East in Gulshan 1. Tahmid shares his artworks from his social media page, Crazy Creative. This exhibition intrinsically focuses on combining the aesthetic of Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animation film company by Hayao Miyazaki, and internalising it within different moments that are woven in our culture.

Tahmid spoke about the inspirations behind the art that he creates.  "The reason behind starting Crazy Creative was to do things that represented me and my experiences," he states. "The illustrations started out as a merged vision of recurring moments in my life and an imaginative child self. It has everything, starting from playing "Pokémon" battles with my friends, imagining being on the cat bus from "My Neighbor Totoro" to being stuck in whims of daydreams, while doodling on exam scripts."

"Art That Moves" is embedded in modern technology and creations of beautiful escapades in artificial reality. Tahmid uses astute design elements to create the perfect kind of augmented landscape on the same strain very much at par with our social media infused lifestyle, in a way that is delightfully nostalgic in all its whimsies.

While talking about preparing for the exhibition, Tahmid passionately talked about his admiration for the hard work that goes behind a piece of art. "The entire process for each piece takes around three weeks, starting from the illustration to the end animated AR filter integrated into Instagram," he states.  The artist wants to focus on some of his other favourite works such as "Dragon Ball Z" and "Pokémon" for his next installations and exhibition. "Da Vinci, Picasso, pop art and anime among other things inspire me, but I plan on creating my own distinct style merged with personal memories and favourite tales," he says. "Art That Moves" concludes tomorrow (February 7).
