2 cops sent to jail over extortion, looting
Two police officers accused of looting and extorting traders on the Sirajganj highway were arrested and sent to a Sirajganj jail yesterday.
Sub inspector Md Moinul Haque, sub inspector of the Natuapara police camp in Kazipur upazila and Motiur Rahman, assistant sub inspector of Solonga police station were found guilty of looting and extortion, police said.
Officer in charge of Sirajganj detective branch (DB) of police Md Waheduzzaman said the matter came to light following the looting of an onion truck on the Sirajganj highway in Solonga thana under the district on July, 13.
“A group of highway robbers looted the truck near the Hatikumrul area of the highway on July, 13.
The robbers also abducted the driver and helper of the truck and released them after extorting Taka three lakhs for their release,” the DB OC said.
Onion trader Md Mokibur Rahman filed a case with Solonga police station without mentioning any names. The DB police took charge of investigation one day later.
“During investigation we found the accused police officers involved in looting and extorting traders. As they were found guilty in police investigation they have been arrested,” the DB OC said.
The arrestees were produced before the judicial magistrate's court, Sirajganj on Monday afternoon showing them arrested in the case filed by the onion trader.
Judicial Magistrate Md Shariful Islam sent them to jail rejecting their bail prayer, Bimal Kumar, inspector of Sirajganj court said.
The accused police officers have been suspended.
