AL's 'grand reception' for Hasina today

The ruling Awami League will accord a grand reception to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today for receiving “Champions of the Earth” award, UN's highest environmental honour.

The party is planning to gather around 2 lakh people on both sides of the street from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Gono Bhaban to welcome her on her return.

AL secretariat took the decision at a meeting at party President Sheikh Hasina's Dhanmondi office, presidium member Mohammad Nasim said recently.

Hasina is scheduled to land in Dhaka around 1:30pm today and people are expected to begin lining up by the street from 12:00noon.

The premier went to the USA to attend the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) last month.

She received the “Champions of the Earth” award at a programme in New York in recognition of Bangladesh's far-reaching initiatives on climate change and “ICT Sustainable Development Award” for her contribution to Information Communication and Technologies.

The two Dhaka city corporations will also accord a reception to her on Monday for receiving the environmental accolade, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq said.

The programme will be held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
