BCL leader shot, hacked to death
A Chhatra League leader was shot and hacked to death by his rivals at Pakshey in Pabna's Ishwardi upazila on Sunday night, said police.
The victim, Sadrul Alam Pintu, 28, of Char Rooppur village, is the president of Pakshey union unit BCL, pro-ruling Awami League student body.
Azim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station, said around 8:00pm, some criminals first shot Pintu and then hacked him in front of a pharmacy at Rooppur crossing.
The victim was rushed to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex. He was then moved to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. He died there around 4:00am yesterday, the OC said.
Yesterday morning, BCL, Jubo League and AL activists brought out a protest procession and staged a demonstration blocking Rooppur crossing. The road blocking disrupted vehicular movement between southern and northern districts for four hours from 7:00am.
The protesters demanded arrest of Pintu's killers immediately and their punishment.
On information, Jihadul Kabir, superintendent of Pabna police, rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
“Primarily, we have come to know that Pintu had a longstanding conflict with his rival Sourav Hasan Tuntuni over establishing supremacy in Pakshey area. Pintu might have been killed by Sourav's men,” said SP Jihadul.
Locals said the men of Pintu cut off one of Sourav's hands from the wrist in 2015 and Pintu is one of the key accused in the case.
Apart from the case, Pintu stood accused in several other criminal cases, said police.
