Beef, mutton prices fixed for Ramadan

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSSC) yesterday fixed the price of one kg of quality beef at Tk 420 and mutton at Tk 570 for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.

The price of buffalo meat per kg has been set at Tk 400 and lamb at Tk 470.

DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon in a meeting with the leaders of different business organisations at Nagar Bhaban fixed the rate and said the traders would have to sell only quality beef for Tk 420 a kg.

The rate will remain unchanged from the first day of Ramadan to the 26th day of Ramadan, he said.

Mobile courts would conduct drives against food adulteration in the south city during the Ramadan.

The city corporation would take action if anybody was found involved in food adulteration and the use of pesticides on fruits, the mayor warned. The shopkeepers would have to keep a price chart fixed by the DSCC authorities.

“The DSCC authorities are working to build two slaughterhouses where at least 4,000 cows, goats and other animals can be slaughtered safely a day," Sayeed said this when the meat traders demanded more slaughterhouses.

Khokon also asked the bakery traders to mention the manufacturing and expiry dates on their products.

Rabiul Alam, general secretary of Bangladesh Meat Traders Association, said there are four slaughterhouses in the city, but their condition is very bad.

He also requested Khokon to increase the facility of the slaughterhouses and the number of veterinary surgeons to monitor the animals' slaughtering properly.
