Bus crushes university student's leg

She was working for a firm to support her education as her father's business was not going well. She was dreaming that in a month or two, she would finish her MBA, get a better job and run the family all by herself.

But the dream was dealt a blow yesterday.

Around 9:00am, a bus smashed her right leg against the base of a pavement in the capital's Farmgate, badly displacing the shin.

It happened as Runi Akhter, a student of University of Development Alternative (UODA) in Dhanmondi, was about to take another bus to go to her office, Rangs Properties, in Tejgaon area. Her brother had just dropped her in his motorcycle from their home in Hazaribagh.

Immediately after the accident, the 27-year-old was rushed to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor). Doctors performed a surgery on the leg. Later, she was admitted to a private hospital in Kalyanpur.  

“I don't know when she would be able to walk again. It looks very bad,” her father Mohammad Rafique, a contractor, told The Daily Star at Nitor.

“The incident has thrown my daughter's future into total uncertainty,” he said. “I don't earn much. My daughter took the job two years ago to share the family burden…” 

Office-in-Charge Mazharul Islam of Tejgaon Police Station said they seized the bus and arrested the driver. A case was being filed.

On April 3, Rajib Hossain, a third-year student of Government Titumir College, lost his right hand after it got stuck between two speeding buses trying to overtake each other in the capital's Bangla Motor area.
