Ex-husband, cohorts 'rape' woman

A woman was allegedly abducted and gang-raped by her former husband and his accomplices in Laxmipur's Kamalnagar upazila Friday night.

Victim's mother on Saturday night filed a case against her daughter's ex-husband Abu Kalam, 35, and his two accomplices with Kamalnagar Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

In the case statement, she said Kalam married her daughter around 10 years ago. Since then, Kalam had been demanding dowry from her family and they gave him money on different occasions. As they refused to give him more money last year, he beat up her daughter severely. Around five months ago, her daughter divorced Kalam, she added.

Kalam along with his two aides kidnapped her daughter from Torabganj on Friday evening and raped her. They cut off her daughter's hair and she was also beaten up, the woman added.

Police arrested one of the accused Babul in Bhabaniganj area early yesterday.

The victim, 35, and a mother of two, is now undergoing treatment at Laxmipur Sadar Hospital.

She alleged that her ex-husband and his two aides kidnapped her when she was going to her brother's house in Sahapur village of Sadar upazila. They confined her to a room in Kalam's house and raped her there.

At one stage, she lost consciousness and regained her senses beside a road on Saturday morning. Locals rescued her and sent her to her family, the victim said.

Anwar Hossain, resident medical officer of Laxmipur Sadar Hospital, said the woman was admitted to the hospital on Saturday night and her body bore several injury marks.

He said a medical examination would be conducted on her to known whether she was raped.

Akul Chandra Biswas, officer-in-charge of Kamalnagar Police Station, said drives were on to detain the other accused.
