Harassed, girl 'kills herself'
A schoolgirl has "taken her life" in Ashulia of Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, after allegedly being stalked by two youths.
On information, police recovered the body of Shila Akter, daughter of Awlad Hossain, from home on Tuesday night, said Abdul Awal, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station.
Quoting the victim's family, the police official said Shila, a class-X student, returned home from school around 1:00pm on Tuesday. Sometime later, family members saw her body hanging from a ceiling fan of her bedroom through a window as the room was locked from inside. They entered the room and also found a suicide note there.
Police later recovered the suicide note that read she did not do anything wrong, yet she had to suffer. She asked why the image of her family should be tarnished. So, she chose to take her life. She also held two youths responsible for her death, the note added.
Victim's father Awlad said her daughter told him around a week ago that two youths used to disturb her when she was returning home from school.
He communicated the matter to a teacher of her school. The teacher assured him that he would do something so that those stalkers did not disturb her anymore.
But the youths again stalked her on the day she committed suicide, Awlad added.
OC Awal said the girl's family did not file any complaint against those stalkers. Police lodged an unnatural death case.
Khorshed Alam, additional superintendent of Savar police circle, said they would investigate the allegation of stalking and also verify the handwriting of Shila to know whether the note had been written by her.
If the allegation was found to be true and Shila had written the note, they would take necessary lawful steps against the youths.
The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
