'Rape' in Car: Man caught, beaten up by mob

A 35-year-old man was arrested on charge of raping a woman in his car in the capital's College Gate area in the wee hours yesterday.

Mahmudul Haque Rony, 35, a resident of Jigatola, was beaten up, stripped and handed over to police by an angry mob, Biplob Kumar Sarkar, deputy commissioner (Tejgaon) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told The Daily Star.

The officer added that Rony seemed to be quite drunk at the time.

The driver of the car was also beaten up and stripped by the mob. But he fled the scene.

The 21-year-old woman accused him of raping her in a case filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station yesterday evening.

According to her statement, she and another woman stopped Rony's car near College Gate and requested him to drop them off at a nearby place.

Some moments later, Rony dropped the complainant's companion off near Shishu Mela intersection and raped her in the car, Ganesh Gopal Biswas, officer-in-charge of the police station, said, quoting the case statement.

As the accuser tried to free herself and struggled in the car stuck in traffic at College Gate, onlookers rescued her and dragged Rony and the driver out of the car and beat them up, the OC said, adding that the car had been seized.

A video of the mob assaulting Rony and the driver went viral on social media yesterday.
