7 raped every day last month
More than seven women were raped every day on an average last month, says a report of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad.
The number of rapes reported last month is the highest to have happened in a single month since 2010, according to data collected by the women’s rights organisation.
At least 232 rape incidents were reported in September, a significant rise from 169 in August, said the monthly report based on news published in 14 national dailies.
Of the reported incidents, 15 were of murder after rape and 19 gang rape.
Besides, there were at least 15 other incidents of attempted rape and 30 sexual harassment, it added.
Overall, the incidents of violence against women and girls have increased significantly last month.
At least 521 women and girls had been subjected to violence in September while the number was 379 in August, the report added.
Over 41 women and girls were murdered, 21 others assaulted and 17 abducted.
Five of 13 women tortured for dowry last month had died, the report mentioned.
At least 19 women and girls died by suicide after being tortured while 29 died in mysterious circumstances, according to the report.
Some 42 incidents of child marriage were reported and 41 such marriages prevented, the report said.
