AL election posters still up violating code
Hundreds of posters seeking votes for the Awami League have been pasted on the walls of different buildings in Dinajpur town in violation of the electoral code of conduct.
The Daily Star correspondent found posters inscribed with different development activities carried out during the last two regimes of the AL government, plastered on walls everywhere in Kalitola, Charubaburmore, Bhutibaburmore and Bahadurbazar and Ramnagar areas.
Although many walls, including the boundary walls of Dinajpur Sadar Police Station, have been filled up with these posters, both the election official concerned and senior AL leaders claim they have not noticed this.
Firuzul Islam -- upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Dinajpur Sadar upazila and assistant returning officer (ARO) of the upcoming national election for Dinajpur-3 constituency -- said, “On behalf of the administration we have removed all campaign materials. However, we have not noticed any such posters. We will remove such posters if we find them.”
When contacted, Azizul Imam Chowdhury, general secretary of district unit AL, said, “I have not noticed any such posters and don't know who have put these up.”
The posters seen come with the 'boat' symbol on it and says, 'Nouka Markai Vote Din' (Cast your vote for boat).
According to the electoral code of conduct set by the Election Commission (EC), all sorts of electoral campaign are prohibited during the three weeks before voting day.
As per the EC's directives, the deadline for removing electoral campaign materials expired on midnight of November 18.
