Bhutto envisages special relationship with Bangladesh

December 2, 1972

BHUTTO'S INTERVIEW WITH GUARDIAN

Pakistani President ZA Bhutto envisages a special relationship between Pakistan and Bangladesh in which there would be certain special trade agreements and no visas for the people of one country visiting the other. Bhutto in an interview with the Guardian of London says it is his belief that the special relationship need not be in the form of a federation or a confederation.

He, however, adds that the timing of Pakistan's recognition of Bangladesh should be left to Pakistan. Recognition of Bangladesh, in his personal view, is the only way to establish contact with "Muslim Bengal". He invites the opponents of recognition in Pakistan to put forward any alternative they might have which would enable them to establish contact with Bangladesh. In reference to Indo-Pakistan relations Bhutto says the two countries would have to first solve the problem of withdrawal of forces facing each other so that there could be another summit and several more towards normalisation of relations.

BANGABANDHU REACHES JHALKATHI

Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who left Dhaka on November 29 on a visit to the coastal areas, arrives at Jhalkathi today. The prime minister is on a three-day visit to the coastal areas to see for himself the coastal embankment projects, arrangements for the conservation of coastal forests and preservation of wildlife. At Jhalkathi the PM is received by Awami League leaders and workers and local people.

Out of a total of 2,500 miles of coastal embankment proposed under the first phase, 2,150 miles have already been completed. The remaining 350 miles of embankments would be completed by early next year when the second phase of the project would be taken up. This is told to the Bangabandhu by the chief engineer in charge of the project when the PM visited the coastal areas today.
