Coast guards seize 740kg of venison
Coast guard members arrested a man in possession of 20 maunds (about 740kg) of venison from a trawler in Barguna’s Patharghata upazila early yesterday.
The arrestee is Abdus Sobhan, 55, of Chardoani village under the upazila, said Lt Biswajit Barua, station commander of Patharghata coast guard.
On information, a team of coast guard halted the trawler on the estuary of the Baleshwar river around 2:00am, he said.
After searching the trawler, the team seized the venison, the head of a deer and arrested Sobhan on charges of poaching.
“We handed over the arrestee and the venison to Patharghata police,” the coast guard official said.
A case was filed with Patharghata Police Station in this connection.
Police handed over the venison to the forest department and they destroyed it as per order from Executive Magistrate Humayun Kabir, also Patharghata upazila nirbahi officer, the coast guard official added.
