Girl, 9, dies as ceiling chunks fall in class
A nine-year-old girl died in her classroom in Barguna's Taltali upazila yesterday as chunks of ceiling plaster fell on her.
At least 10 more students were injured in the incident at PK Government Primary School.
The dead child is the school's third-grader student Mansura, daughter of Najir Hossain Hawlader, of Chhoto Bogi village in the upazila.
Pulok Chandra Hawlader, officer-in-charge of Taltali Police Station, said the accident happened around 11:00am during a class. “On information, we immediately sent a police team there. We would take legal action against those responsible.”
Asked, Upazila Education Officer Kazi Moniruzzaman Ripon said he had sent a list of risky buildings in his area last year to his higher authorities. The list included the name of the building too.
The building could not be repaired due to shortage of funding, he added.
Sakerin Jahan, headmaster of the school, echoed Ripon's statement.
She said the school had only one building and that too was constructed at least 20 years ago. The establishment became unfit as no repair measures were taken.
“We informed the higher authorities,” she said.
Meanwhile, the body was handed over to her family members following autopsy, said the OC.
