Pregnent woman strangled 'for dowry'

A pregnant housewife was strangled for dowry at Udaypur village in Kamarkhand upazila of Sirajganj early yesterday, police said.

Abdul Hamid, husband of the victim, Rukshana Khatun, 30, was arrested on charge of killing his wife.

Officer-in-Charge Abu Obaida of Kamarkhand police, quoting the victim's family members, said Rukshana was often tortured by her in-laws for dowry. She was taken to arbitration several times for not meeting their demands, they alleged.

Dulal Hossain, the victim's father, claimed Hamid strangled his daughter and hanged her body in the ceiling to portray the murder as a suicide.

Police recovered the body from the house around 10:00am yesterday, the OC said, adding that the victim's body had several injury marks that proved she was tortured.

The body was sent to Sirajganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

A case was filed against Abdul Hamid with the police station.
