'Robber' killed in 'gunfight' in Laxmipur

An alleged ringleader of a robber gang was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Laxmipur's Raipur upazila early yesterday.

The deceased is Alamgir Hossain of Dakshin Raipur.

On information that a gang of robbers was taking preparation for committing a robbery in Dakshin Raipur area, a team of police conducted a raid there around 2:00am, said Lokman Hossain, officer-in-charge of Raipur Police Station.

Sensing presence of police, the gang members opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a “gunfight”, the official said.

Alamgir was caught in the line of fire and suffered bullet injuries, the OC added.

Later, he was rushed to Raipur Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, Lokman said.

Four policemen -- Sub-Inspector Faruk Hossain and constables Safiqur Rahman, Towhidul Islam and Omar Faruk -- were also injured in the incident, claimed police.

A light gun and three bullets were recovered from the spot.

Alamgir was accused in seven robbery cases, said the OC.

In another incident, an alleged robber, Ershad Hossain, suffered bullet injuries in a “gunfight” between his gang members and police in Dakshin Hamchhadi area of Sadar upazila early yesterday.

Ershad was admitted to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital.

Three policemen were also injured in the incident, said Abdullah Al Mamum, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.

Police recovered a pistol and two bullets from the spot.
